11.19am It's all happening now (ish). Korean Joon-woo Choi gets in with two at the par four 16th to move to five under and Josh Geary joins him there with a TaylorMade R9 SuperDeep TP Driver
on 12. A late flourish at the top of scoreboard for this first group of players out on the course. Clarke goes backwards again. Two bogeys on four and five has him at two under. Choi plays on the Asian Tour and is ranked 898 in the world. There's bolters all over the place on day one at the PGA.
11.15am Scott's completely bonkers round continues. After blowing out to five over after seven holes he's now back to even par after birdies on five of his past six, including four of the first five on the way home. Darren Clarke has dropped back three under with a bogey on four but is still two off the lead.
11.08am Aaron Townsend moves to five under and the outright lead. He's from NSW, has a dog called George and his brother, Glenn, is an engineer and part-time caddy. When he's not playing TaylorMade R9 SuperDeep TP Driver
, he enjoys watching movies. I may or may not be hoping Jason Day or Rickie Fowler or Ogilvy blast a low score this afternoon.
10.57am This leaderboard is a real who's who of golf - as in who the hell is that bloke? Kang-chun Wu, Townsend, Fraser, Geary, Brown, Blizard, Tschudin, Barnes, Choi (not KJ), Wood, Nolan.... take your pick. Darren Clarke is the only big name there or thereabouts thus far, one off the pace at three under.
10.52am The catering staff here know how the journos operate. They put out the lunch buffet at 10.30am. I'm doing my best to resist, otherwise it's double up territory.
10.45am Things just settling a little up here. It's a traditional first day leaderboard really. Lots of fringe hopes populating the top but trying to stay there is the key. Bubba Watson has dropped a couple of shots and is two back from the leaders on two under. Darren Clarke just bogied the par four fourth as well to slip back a shot. Can't help but feel the outright lead is up for grabs with these afternoon groups TaylorMade R9 SuperDeep TP Driver
10.28am Some of the big groups still yet to go today and they tee off around lunchtime, which might be just in time for a shower or two. Geoff Ogilvy, Aaron Baddely and Stuart Appleby are off the first at miiday local time, with Jason Day, Rickie Fowler and YE Yang 10 minutes later. Defending champion Peter Senior is in the next group with Andre Stoltz and Rod Pampling.
10.19am Here's your best few at the moment: Blizard, Townsend, Fraser, Clarke, Geary (- 4), Wu, Lambert, Tschudin, Choi (- 3), Brown, Millar, Goggin, Watson, Wood (Tim, not Tiger), Nolan, Gibson, Kim, Wilson, Hancock, Ning (- 2).
10.16am Scott is finally getting going here. He's fired three birdies on the trot now (18, 1, 2) to go back to two over after 11 holes. If he can keep this run going down the front, he's going to save his bacon. The leaders are at minus four but it's a very congested board. If Scott can get back to even by the end of this, he has good reason to be happy after blowing out to five under in a shocker of a start.
10.09am Greg Chalmers shows how it's done on the par three second. Bangs it dead off the tee and it drops in the hole for an ace. He moves to one over the card on the back of that bit of wizardry. He's in some good company at plus one, a score he shares with Greg Norman and four-time champ Robert Allenby TaylorMade R9 SuperDeep TP Driver |
